Representation of digital information. Computer hardware organisation. Principles of processor architecture. Memory hierarchy and concept of virtual memory. Buses and I/O subsystem. Program execution on a system. Low and high level languages. Multicore and multiprocessor systems. Principles of operating systems. Process management, execution context, thread scheduling and related system calls.

Biography:

Jordi Fornés has worked as a Unix systems engineer since 1994, always in digital post-production companies. In 2002 he became associate professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya to teach the subjects of Operating Systems; area where he has concentrated his lectures since then. Maintaining contact with the audiovisual industry has allowed some of his students to develop their Final Degree Project in this sector. He has also taught Object Oriented Programming and organizes the Computer History Seminar for Telecos in Barcelona.

In research, he collaborates in the area of high-performance computing in the Department of Computer Architecture of the UPC as well as with the Institute of History of Science at the UAB.

He is also the coach of the UPC men's handball team.
