Biography
Pere Puig is Professor of Mathematics at the UAB. He leads the Advanced Statistical Modelling research group and has wide-ranging experience in the development of mathematical and statistical methods, working together with multidisciplinary groups. He has published research findings in prestigious international journals such as the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Technometrics, Animal Science, Radiation Research, PlosOne and the Proceedings of the Royal Society A. He is also editor-in-chief of the journal Statistical and Operation Research Transactions (SORT).

This course equips students with the concepts required to understand key bioinformatics methods such as the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and the Generalised Linear Model (GLM) used in NGS data analysis. Previously introduced probability and statistical concepts are developed and extended. Main subjects include: probability distributions, convergence concepts and large sample results; stochastic processes, probability transition matrix and Markov chains; maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimation; hypothesis tests, likelihood ratio tests and multiple testing issues.
