EUROPE DAY | Scientific Diplomacy: the Role of Science in Europe’s Future

Day: 13.05.2026
Hour: 12:30 PM
Place: ESCI-UPF Auditorium

On the occasion of Europe Day, celebrated on 9 May, ESCI-UPF is organising a round table on 13 May at 12:30 pm focused on scientific diplomacy, an increasingly relevant field in today’s international context.

Scientific diplomacy brings together collaboration between governments, institutions, and the academic and scientific community. In the European context, its importance has grown significantly in recent years: according to the European Commission, more than 40% of the European Union’s international agreements now include scientific or technological components, highlighting the key role of science as a tool for cooperation and international outreach. In a context marked by multiple crises, scientific diplomacy has become a key strategy to address global challenges such as climate change, energy security, and technological innovation.

This round table will provide an opportunity to reflect on the role of science in international relations and its capacity to foster cooperation in a complex global environment. The session will feature two experts in the field:

The event will be opened by Professor Josep Ibáñez, Commissioner for EUTOPIA and international programmes at UPF. The round table will be moderated by Mark Jeffery, professor at ESCI-UPF and author of the book "La Unió Europea: una immersió ràpida".

The event will be held in English and is open to the entire university community and the general public. To attend, prior registration is required via the following form:
