BDBI Talks | Perspectives from a Basic Research Lab and a Biotech Start-up
Día:
16.11.2022
Hora: 10:00 AM
Lugar: Conference Room (ESCI-UPF building)
Every year, the students attending Introduction to Bioinformatics have the opportunity to listen to different experts working in the Bioinformatics field to get in touch with the applications and the future challenges of this computational science.
In this new session, Esther Lizano, senior researcher at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) and co-founder of Flomics Biotech, will talk about the differences and similarities between two career options a bioinformatician can pursue. An academic path through different projects ranging from obtaining a Y chromosome assembly to reconstructing proteins from fossil samples, as well as the work done in a biotechnology start-up.
The conference will also be streamed on ESCI-UPF Youtube’s channel:
Esther Lizano is a chemist and holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the Universität Leipzig, where she did a comparative analysis of tRNA nucleotidyltransferases. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE).
In 2018 she co-founded Flomics Biotech, a biotechnology company operating in the field of genomics, bioinformatics and NGS, searching for solutions to be implemented in clinical practice. Flomics also provides a complete range of personalized genomic services. At present, Lizano is the Chief Scientist Officer of Flomics.
The talk is addressed to first-year students who attend the Introduction to Bioinformatics course, although it is also open to all of the ESCI-UPF community.
