Biography

Carmelo Zappulla studied architecture at the Università degli Studi di Palermo and holds a. After working in Rotterdam and in London, he moved to Barcelona, where he started working with RCR Arquitectes and Foreign Office Architects. Together with Nacho Toribio, Zappulla set up and now runs the Barcelona-based firm External Reference Architects, which was awarded the Best Young Italian Architect Prize awarded by New Italian Blood in 2011. The firm is active in design and research in the fields of sensorial spaces, interior design, architecture, and landscape design. He is currently a staff member at IAAC and a lecturer at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), where he is also the coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Interior Design.
